There is a box within a box. When you open that box, there come more boxes, one after another, until, in the end, they are gone. “A moment within a moment”. What we call reality is a set of boxes onto which time, space, and this physical body have been projected, layer over layer, after a long spiritual process.
The hands and words of these women who live in Tokyo seem to be very far, and yet draw near to us through the boxes of our thoughts. And as these words become, little by little, a part of the picture, as certain elements, shapes, and colors work in their respective layers, it crystallizes into a deep world that belongs to you alone.

Kaoru Usukubo

The Tokyo Biennale is held once every two years in the city of Tokyo. For this project, Kaoru Usukubo interviewed some women who work in the business district in the middle of Tokyo, and created a mural based on the inner worlds of these women. This work began with the stories from the respective women, and as such, can be considered a collaborative work beteween them and Usukubo.
Personal stories take on a universal quality through the creative process, and then circulate through the perspectives of the viewers, guiding various readings of the images. This then becomes part of a new memory.
This is a beautiful work where several different realities intricately co-exist, consistent with Usukubo’s approach to “portray a greater world through intimate perspectives.”. The original paintings on which the mural is based, as well as other unreleased works will be exhibited simultaneously.

She Is. Your Alter Ego Found Right Next to You

‘Hands and memories’ through anonymous interviews.

‘Hands and memories’ through anonymous interviews.
Inside one box is another box. When you open the box, new boxes appear one after the other inside it, until finally there is nothing. What is called ‘fleeting moments’ reality is a set of ‘boxes’ in which time, space and this body are projected layer by layer through mental processes. Imagination and reality are inseparable companions, and the ‘world’ exists only in our minds.
The hands and words of these Tokyo-based women, who seem to be completely far away, come right alongside you through the box of our thoughts. And when the words gradually become part of the picture, an element, a shape, a colour, crystallises in the same way as your world, working on different layers, but with depth.
